Knowles Creek Trail and Water

Friday – July 03, 2017 – Richardson Lake Camp Host

Temps: High 75º, Low 53º

Over the weekend the campground was almost full. The campers have behaved themselves so we have had no issues. The weather has been beautiful as well with highs in the mid 70's and sunny to mostly sunny sky's. However with the warmer temperatures we have seen more mosquitoes but they are not bad.

Yesterday we checked out a interpretive trail near Wabeno at the Knowles CreekWetland Impoundment. It is located about 10 miles east of Wabeno on Hwy C. The short .75 mile trail that runs along the edge of a manmade wetland and includes interpretive signs, benches and an observation deck. We did not see any waterfowl on the day we visited but I am sure it is busy during the spring and fall migrations.

Water – fresh and waste.
We have pretty large tanks on our camper, 73 gallons fresh water, 45 gallons black water and two gray water tanks that total 90 gallons. We are pretty frugal with our water use. We each take a navy shower every other day. We also installed a Showermiser that we picked up at the rally in Goshen. It is a heat sensitive tube you intall in the water line from the shower and has a valve that recirculates the water back to the tank or pump. You keep the valve closed when running the water until it gets hot. Once the water is hot the tube turns white. You can then turn the valve so the water goes to your shower head. It saves all that water running down the drain before the hot water makes it to the shower.

A water saving hack I made is homemade wipes. It seems like I am always wiping down the counters in the camper and instead of running water to wet the dish cloth I use one or two of these wipes. They are much more economical than the store bought kind and really easy to make. Here is the link to the directions. I used regular paper towels but in the future will make them with Viva or some type of paper towel that is a little more sturdy. I may even make some for at home because they are so convenient.

We wash the dishes in a plastic tub in the sink. We then have a choice whether we want to dump it into the gray tank or outside. We will also dump this water down the toilet form time to time as it adds extra water to the black tank. It helps keep that waste more fluid and easier to dump.

We don't do anything special for washing up or brushing our teeth other than to not let the water run constantly. These tasks use very little water.

After one week we still have about a third of a tank of fresh water left. If we need to add more, there is a hand water pump about 50 yards away from our camper we can use to fill our 30 gallon water bladder. Then we pump it into the tank using an old RV pump.

As with most RV's our tank monitoring lights on our waste tanks no longer show accurate levels. We have not filled up either one of the gray tanks yet and we know we can go at least 4 weeks on the black tank from past experience. When we do have to empty we will take the camper to the Potawatomi Carter Casino which is about 10 miles away and use their dump station.

So for the most part we have many of the comforts of full hookups with the benefit of an awesome campsite.

After one week we still have about a third of a tank of fresh water left. If we need to add more there is a hand water pump about 50 yards away from our camper. We also have a 30 gallon water bladder and an old RV pump to transfer water to our camper. We have used the bladder before but not the pump. It remains to be seen how well that will work.
