White Sands, Deming and Wilcox

1/18/2021 – White Sands, Deming and Wilcox

Monday was sightseeing day as Henry did not have school. We drove over to Hueco Tanks State Park in Texas but discovered that you needed reservations to get in. We left and drove up to Alamagordo NM. Visited the McQuin Pastachio Ranch. The main attraction is a giant pistachio and large visitor store. A tourist trap if I ever saw one but kind of neat non the less. From there we drove to White Sands National Park. There were ALOT of people there as it was Martin Luther King Day. We purchased a sled and had fun sliding down the sand dunes.

Tuesday we had extremely windy weather so decided to hunker down for the day. By Wednesday morning the high winds were gone. We packed up and left after geography class headed for Deming NM. Henry missed live Math class but made it up later in the day. We stayed three nights at Dreamcatcher RV Park in Deming.

When we first visited this area a few years a go we went to nearby City of Rocks State Park. The rock formations are so cool and climbable and I so wanted to visit it with Henry. Unfortunately the State of Mexico closed all its state parks to out of state visitors so we could not go in. So disappointing! We drove over to nearby Rock Hound State Park where we were able park and Henry and I climbed part way up a hill. It was quit steep and rocky but we made it up and down without falling. We enjoyed the view from the top and made our way back down.

Saturday January 23th we continued our journey west. Our next stop was Wilcox AZ and Fort Wilcox RV Park. Another no nonsense RV park but it included Wi-Fi and cable TV. Watched a disappointing Packer game on Sunday. Wi-Fi was good here and we were able to use it for Henry's school.

The forecast for Monday and Tuesday called for cold weather and snow. We took advantage of Saturday's 60's degrees and drove over to Fort Bowie National Monument and took the 1 1/2 mile hike through a beautiful valley to the fort site. There was a nice visitor center and lots of ruins from the old fort. It was getting colder and the sun was going down so we quickly walked through the ruins and headed back to the truck.

We spent Monday and Tuesday hunkered down in the camper as it was very cold, windy and rainy. Tuesday we even had snow! Wednesday after morning classes, we drove north toward Safford AZ and Mt. Graham. We wanted to visit Eastern Arizona College Discovery Park in Safford. It sounded very cool and has a telescope that you can view the sun through filters. It would have been very appropriate for Henry has he is learning about the sun and the solar system. However upon arrival the doors were locked even though all the information I could find said it should be open. Another disappointment. We then took a drive up Mt. Graham. Because of the recent snow they had, the road was closed to the top. We drove up to about 5500 feet and stopped to play in the snow. On another day we visited Tombstone and Henry got to see some “real” cowboys.
