On our way south 2021

 12/28/2020- 1/3/2021 – On our way south 2021

After anxiously waiting for the end of December to get here we are finally on our way south. Sheila, Henry, Alex and Monica came to our house of Christmas day (Friday). We enjoyed a ham dinner then opened gifts. Alex and Monica stayed over night and left the next morning. On Saturday we packed the Christmas decorations away and began to pack the camper for our trip south. We originally planned to leave on Tuesday the 29th as Henry had a dentist appointment on Monday. However a winter storm was moving toward the Midwest and was scheduled to arrive Tuesday evening we decided to leave a day earlier to make sure we got in front of the storm.

Sunday evening we drained the water in the house, got up early Monday morning and were on the road by 8:00. It had snowed 2” over night so the roads were a little snow covered. We made it up the big steep hill near our house but within a few miles the roads were clear. It was a long day (477 miles, 8 plus hours). Henry handled it very well and seemed excited for this new adventure. Arrived at Old Bates Campground in early evening. We recently joined Passport America which is a campground discount program. Old Bates will be the first passport park we stayed at.

We got another early start Tuesday morning with the goal of reaching Little Rock Arkansas by mid afternoon. We arrived at Willow Beach Campground mid afternoon. This is a nice Army Corp of Engineers Park on the Colorado River south of Little Rock. Arrived early enough for Henry to do a little fishing. Another long day (364 miles, 7 plus hours).

We had thoughts of staying at Willow Beach for another day but heavy rain was predicted for Wednesday so we decided to move on to our next stop, Red Shoes RV Resort near Kinder LA. Henry got us up extra early, 5:00 so we were on the road before 7. Rained on and off all day but the temperature is climbing into the upper 60's. Only 335 miles today. Arrived at Red Shoes with plenty of daylight so Henry could ride his bike and expend some energy. We booked two nights and despite rain on and off all day Thursday it was warm. Henry found a friend to ride bike with and they had fun riding in the rain and puddles.

Friday it was on to Jetstream RV Resort in Webster TX near Houston. The sun was out but it was cooler with temps in the 50's. After a short 181 mile drive we arrived at Jetstream around 1:00. Since it was January 1 there was no one in the office and no indication of the site we were supposed to go to. One of the residence stopped and helped us to reach someone. We pulled into site 85 and set up.

Saturday we took a drive to Galveston and walked on the beach. Henry collected lots of shells. After a quick lunch at Subway we drove south along the coast to Freeport to check out Quintana Beach County Campground, our next camping spot. It looked nice and the cell service was strong so we decided it would work. Before leaving the Houston area we wanted to go to Houston Spaceport. So Sunday we purchased tickets on line and spent most of the day exploring this space museum. The highlight for me was the huge Saturn 5 rocket on display. It was the type of rocket that was used for all the Apollo missions to the moon.
