1/04/2021 – Virtual School, Crabbing and Fishing in Texas
After a week of traveling it is back to school for Henry. School went very well despite the distraction of workers digging up and repairing a water main right next to our camper. We were able to use the park WI-FI which was nice. There are 4 live session in the morning so he is done before noon. We left Jetstream RV Resort after noon and headed to our next location Quintana Beach County Park near Freeport, TX. It was only 60 miles and a short hour and half away. Once we got settled in our site, Dennis and Henry explored the campground and beach while I went to the store.
School on Tuesday went well. In the afternoon we tried our hand at catching blue crab in the rocks along the jetty. The only equipment required is a piece of fishing line, a small net and a chicken neck. Dennis caught 4 crab and after steaming them for 15 minutes we extracted a small amount of meat and had a crab meat snack. A lot of work for a little meat but it tasted really good. The rest of the day was spent riding bikes and playing on the playground equipment.
On Wednesday it was a Henry Jekyll and Hyde day. One minute sweet as pie the next a obnoxious child. Getting him started on each class was a struggle. Once he got going he was fine. In the afternoon we tried our hand at fishing on the jetty. Only Dennis purchased a license so I just watched. Henry did not need a license. The go to bait here is shrimp. Kind of like using worms in Wisconsin just about anything will bite on shrimp. This became apparent as the very first thing we caught was a stingray! It was about 18” wide and was a real surprise when we pulled it in and saw what is was. We let it go and then headed back to the camper. The temperature the last few days has been in the upper 60's. Pretty nice. We had rain in the evening and then it is supposed to be cooler the next few days.
The remainder of the week went well with school. One day we took a drive to SanBernard National Wildlife Refuge. We took the auto tour drive and stopped to walk the Bobcat Woods Trail and boardwalk. Once back on the auto tour we stopped at a viewing deck and near some water and spotted several ducks, ibis and even a black necked stilt. It was a fun day. We also visited the Sea Center Texas in Lake Jackson.
Where we are parked: Quintana Beach County Park Campground – Quintana TX – 56 Full Hookup sites - $22/night – Nice park right on the beach and next to the Brazos River. Able to watch the big ships coming and going to the port.
